Welcome to Dixie (Take Two)

The Journey Begins Again

Hello All and welcome to a new Charmingly Dixie site. You’ll still find all the old things here because, well, here in Dixie we like to keep old things and just fix them up. But you’ll also find some new things.

If you know me personally and out in reality, then you know some of what will be said here, but probably not all. Some things I share in the moment. Some things I keep close to my chest. And some things just don’t ever get said. By way of introduction to anyone who hasn’t visited my site before, this is the blog that I started in 2013 when I made my first attempt at being a professional photographer. I have to admit that I made an OK go of it at that time, but I probably didn’t actually give it 110% percent. That’s most likely why it wasn’t a long-lasting endeavor.

Needless to say, not nearly long enough after I quit working for someone else in order to pursue a passion, I went right back to working for someone else. More of the same old, same old. Although that seems like a disheartening way to start off the first post on a new blog, allow me to explain why I start there. I’m starting there because, as those of you who know me can attest, it was not long after I went back to working full-time that my family began what turned into a long journey to where we are today. Some of the details of that journey will come out in the pages to follow, but I can’t give away all the details here at the beginning. (Spoilers) Suffice it to say that I learned a great deal over that time. It’s given me some new perspectives on things in life, and has worked to refocus my priorities. This blog is an attempt to share some of that with you, the world at large.

The reason I’ve decided to start this blog today is two-fold:

1) There’s no time like the present.

I’m starting this today because, why wait. One of the things that has come into extreme sharp focus recently is that we are not guaranteed another minute to say or do anything. It is all a precious gift, and I intend to no longer put off things that I should be doing now. For those who don’t know, my mother passed about 6 weeks ago. To experience that at any age is tough, but also at any age it brings the finiteness of life into perspective with eternity. It’s brought two the surface the realization that I have not been living intentionally and have not put the right things as priority in my life. My sister wrote a wonderful post the day Momma died that clearly showed how we were all feeling at the time. Here is a link to her post, I hope you’ll take the time to read it if you haven’t already

Since that time, my Dad has joined the Facebook community and has shared as he is working through his grief and using it to the best of his ability to assist others who may face similar trials.

I on the other hand am one who has to take time to process how I’m really feeling before sharing with anyone. The fact that this post exists is part of that healing for me. I don’t know that I can now, or that I necessarily ever will be able to share all, but this is an outlet for some of that, and hopefully a way to refocus it into something much more positive and ultimately glorifying to God.

2) Why not?

That’s right, Why not? All the blog tutorials out there will tell you that to be successful as a blogger, you must have a laser focus and know exactly what you want your blog to be about. I say, no one ever made a real difference by doing things the safe way that everyone else had success. I’m sure that there will be pitfalls along the way. I’m sure that I’ll make mistakes. I’m even sure that there’s probably a much more efficient way to get to where this thing will pay off in the long run, but honestly that’s not what it’s about.

If I’m honest with myself, and I really should be, this is not so much a vehicle to make money (although wouldn’t it be cool if it did?). Instead, this is a vehicle for self-expression. This is a creative outlet, and one that I hope will benefit someone along the way.

This isn’t all-encompassing, but some of what I hope to share on here are things that I’m passionate about.

Daily Bread

I’m setting up a section, and hope to have my first post up tonight, called Daily Bread. I’m going to use that section to talk through some of what I’m studying in Scripture, or just a verse of the day. I do hope to start some discussion on those posts as I think that we can all learn to better serve Christ through sharing what we’re doing in our own neighborhoods and around the world.

Photography

Because this started as a photography blog, I would be remiss if I didn’t include photography as often as possible. I still have a passion for it, and maybe one day I’ll be able to be a full-time photographer. Until then, I’ll post on here and on Instagram (@CharminglyDixie) so please follow me just in case something shows up there that doesn’t make its way to the blog.

I also still have my portfolio site, so if there are any images on here that you absolutely love and would like to have, please consider buying a print. I love to share my work with anyone who will look at it.

Travel

I don’t think I’d be a very good blogger if I didn’t at least try to have travel as an integral part of my purpose, because isn’t that why everyone gets into blogging? Right at the moment, I don’t have a ton of travel on the schedule for this year, but there are a few short trips planned here and there and I do intend to make the most of them.

Creative Writing

And last but certainly not least, at the suggestion of my brother, I want to use this as a bit of a creative writing outlet. He has over the last few months been stretching his brain to answer creative writing prompts online, and I think he’s got some fantastic skills. I don’t know how much will make its way on here as actual posts, but I do intend to share my journey as I stretch creative muscles that I’ve not used recently.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Well, what started out as a short intro post has now morphed into over a 1000 word essay on why I’m (re)starting a blog. If you’ve made it this far, I truly do appreciate your patience. Most posts won’t be nearly this verbose, but I can’t promise that they won’t happen from time to time. Like I said before, this is an adventure and there’s no telling where we’ll end up. If you’re at all interested in what comes next, please consider following me and visiting often. If I write something that touches you, all I ask is that you share it. If there’s something you’d like me to focus on or a question you may have, please ask away. I’ll do my best to respond to comments and love hearing what you have to say.

Until next time…..

Allyson

    • Thank you so much Erin! I absolutely love to find His fingerprints on everything around us and sharing what I’m learning in His word each day is honestly the best part of my day.
